One, One, and Three

On a warm spring day, after getting two letters of rejection, I was told that I was a 2010 Windgate Fellow. Months of preparation have followed.

Some might say I am on a journey for craft. They would not be wrong.

Today as I was working for an artist in the hot glass shop, I told him I was looking for my voice.

This is true, or at least less false.

In the beginning, I wanted to make something. I wanted the world to stop and there be just this one thing; a thing that I had created and understood. I don’t have to tell you but the world is complicated and confusing.

We all make something.

Craft sometimes feels like unjustified meaning, but it most often means: “the art we can’t fit in this box”. Craft is the foundation of art. Craft is process; thoughtful process. Sometimes the most inexplicable shoes feel like your pair. Now that’s Art.

In the coming months, my wife and I will travel west. We have lived in the Southeastern United States all of our lives and may live here all the rest, but for three months we will taste the breeze. The Windgate Fellowship will allow us to travel, live in new cities, work with amazing artists, and produce unique artworks.

Join us….

....but first, Good-bye Tennessee.
